Current-temperature relations
Current-Temperature Relations
Wind speed and direction are the most important factors
A simple sensitivity analysis of current-temperature relations (IEEE-738) shows just how dominantly wind contributes to the heat transfers on a line. Temperature and solar are the next important weather parameters to model current-temperature relations, yet these parameters are not nearly as dominant or as variable as wind.

The relative amount of variation due to each factor is approximately:
- Wind Speed: 40–90%
- Wind Direction:20–40%
- Temperature: 5–40%
- Solar: 0–15%
Accuracy in wind modeling is essential
Modeling and forecasting wind are complex, particularly over dense vegetation and rough terrain where many transmission corridors are located. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) is one of the most effective ways to model wind and is standard in industries such wind resource assessments and extreme wind analysis for structural analysis.
WindSim’s core CFD is a capable solution for a wide range of applications requiring in one way or another wind knowledge. Applications where wind modeling and forecasting is of importance stand to benefit from our software and services. WindSim’s years of experience delivering wind knowledge to customers in the wind industry and can bring the experience to transmission physical modeling applications. We believe our experience will be an asset to the transmission industry.
