WindSim 5.1 Released | Download your copy

WindSim 5.1 includes a long list of new features, added functionality, and valuable extensions. Here are some highlights:

  • FORECASTING MODULE
  • Calculates the energy production of your wind farm from CFD downscaled mesoscale weather predictions corrected by Artificial Neural Networks
  • IEC CLASSIFICATION
  • Define the turbine class by the IEC 61400-1, edition 3, amendment 1 (2010). Inclusion of the wake added turbulence by the Frandsen model
  • EXENDED TURBULENCE MODELLING
  • The K-omega Wilcox model is ready with improvements in complex sites
  • QUEUING
  • Run wind field simulations while working in other modules or projects
  • TERRAIN CONVERSION - GLOBAL MAPPER API
  • Via either the Terrain Editor or WindSim Express, see separate news below, you can easily convert from a large variety of formats to the WindSim terrain format using Global Mapper
  • LOSSES & UNCERTAINTIES MODULE
  • SCALED AMBIENT TURBULENCE

WindSim Express | Check it out at EWEA
Did you think CFD was only for experts - check out WindSim Express, it makes CFD based micro-siting a simple three step procedure. First, name your project. Second, load your turbine positions and measurement data. Finally, set the resolution of the numerical model. That’s all.

WindSim Express automatically downloads a terrain model of the area of interest and runs the simulations. It runs standalone, but works also as a wizard for setting up projects in WindSim. It is bundled with WindSim for free.

What about the accuracy? WindSim Express uses global terrain models. The quality of the elevation and roughness data varies from region to region, this will affect the accuracy. However, a project established in WindSim Express can be opened in WindSim, in case more advanced adjustments are required to reproduce the local wind fields at your site.

Check out WindSim Express at EWEA in Copenhagen 16-19 April; visit us at booth C2-C30.

Eurostars | Wind energy optimization
EuroStarts Together with our two partners Concentration Heat And Momentum Limited and Iberdrola Ingenieria y Construccion, WindSim AS has completed the project "Wind energy optimization by numerical wind modeling". The project was funded through the Eurostars program which is a European Joint Programme dedicated to the R&D performing SMEs.

The R&D challenges we attacked during the 18 months long project period spanned widely, including:

  • SYNTHESIZING SIMULATION AND REMOTE SENSING
  • WAKE MODELLING WITH ACTUATOR DISC CONCEPT
  • ROBUST AND FASTER SIMULATIONS
  • MESO - MICRO COUPLING
  • VALIDATION
Development of improved numerical methods within micro-siting requires extensive testing, hence a significant part of the project was spent on validation. We gratefully acknowledge the contribution from Iberdrola and the other stakeholders, Mighty River Power, Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk, Statkraft and Statoil that delivered validation data.

International Standards
International Standards The Consulting Service Manager in WindSim, Mr. Andrea Vignaroli, has been nominated expert of the Technical Committee IEC TC88:Wind Turbines. Andrea will work on the revision of the standard IEC 61400-1 Design requirements. We congratulate him with the nomination and wish him good luck in this important work.

Unfortunately there are no international standards defining how numerical micro-siting should be performed. This is a sad fact as the extrapolation from the measurement position to the turbine position made with numerical models is known to introduce significant inaccuracies. Initiatives for establishing standards or guidelines will be warmly welcomed.

Certificates | Wind Knowledge is Wind Power
The first WindSim Certificate Examination was held on Feb. 27th in Beijing. In line with our slogan "Wind Knowledge is Wind Power" we have expanded our training program, after attending the basic and advanced training courses we invite wind professionals to become certified WindSim users by passing the Certificate Exam. We congratulate the first four WindSim users that obtained their certificates; Shuai Cheng and Jingwen Ynag from Beijing Tianyuan Science & Technology Creation Windpower Technology Co.,Ltd. and Yukun Deng and Qian Dong from China Power Construction Engineering Consulting Corporation.
