Known shortcomings in the most recent version will in general also apply to older versions. But not always, as shortcomings might be connected with new features not present in old versions. Particular bugs and shortcomings only related to old versions are given towards the end of this page.
| Inaccuracies in the post-processing of models made orthogonal | ||
| Inaccuracies are introduced when post-processing results from a simulation using an orthogonal grid. Since the original grid is used in the post-processing without any interpolation, only with a simple transfer of the results node by node, from the orthogonal grid used in the simulations. We recommend to make the grid orthogonal, only if required due to high inclinations, probably with inclination angles above 50 - 60 degrees. The orthogonalization modifies the grid in areas of high inclination, and therefore the introduced inaccuracies are largest in these areas. | ||
| Convergence monitoring | ||
| Translation of the model by pressing the left mouse button while playing the animation in the report will cause WindSim to exit. The application used to play the animation is the same as the one used in "Park layout" in the module Objects. A functionality conflict arises and causes this exit. | ||
| Convergence monitoring | ||
| If the Field value to monitor is given as either Velocity vector XY or Velocity vector XYZ, then the animation in the report will not display correctly the colors. | ||
| Directional shifts problems for nested models | ||
| The nesting procedure impose artificial walls on the east and west borders for simulations for sectors 0° and 180° and on the north and south border for simulations for the sectors 90° and 270°, which could impose unphysical directional shifts. As an alternative you could consider to use refinement. Making only one model for the whole area, and still be able to get a sufficient resolution in the areas of interest by refinement. Refinement is introduced in Terrain in version 4.5.0. | ||
| Working with the time history format .tws | ||
| If climatology data is established in both the time history format (.tws) and the frequency distribution format (.wws), and if the filenames are equal e.g. abc.tws and abc.wws, then the execution of the module Objects corrupts the file abc.wws and the execution fails. The workaround is to use different filenames. | ||
| Failed updates of the directional shifts at climatology points | ||
| Whenever multiple layouts are used, and the layouts do not contain the same climatologies, then the calculation of the directional shifts at the climatology points might fail. The directional shift at a climatology point is the change in wind direction between the border and the climatology position. In both the modules Wind Resources and Energy the directional shifts are determined by the setting of the property "Sector interpolation". Hence the failure will affect both these modules, and consequently the created wind resource map and energy production will be incorrect. The failure will occur regardless of the setting of the property "Sector interpolation", whether it is set TRUE or FALSE. The failure is due to an incomplete update of the directional shifts when changing between layouts. | ||
| Two examples are given using multiple layouts, in the first example the failure does not occur while in the other the failure occur. | ||
| Example 1 - Changing turbine layouts while keeping the climatologies fixed. | ||
| This is the most common use of multiple layouts. First a layout is established with given turbine positions. New layouts are generated with new turbine characteristics our new turbine positions. The climatologies are the same for all layouts. No failure will occur in this situation. | ||
| Example 2 - Changing climatologies. | ||
| If multiple layouts are established and the climatologies are different in the layouts, then the calculation of the directional shifts will be incomplete, when changing layouts. The failure will occur in this situation. | ||
| The failed updates of the directional shifts at climatology points is fixed by replacing the two following executables; Wind_resources.exe and Energy.exe with the executables with the same name in the default folder: C:\Program Files\WindSim\WindSim4.7.0\Bin. | ||
| An alternative workaround with the original executables is to force a recalculation of the directional shifts by changing the setting of the property "Sector interpolation" and rerun the module. | ||
| Failed updates of the directional shifts at climatology points | ||
| See above under Wind Resources | ||
| Report generation with missing figures | ||
| Some of the figures in the report will be missing when the number of nodes in grid.gws file exceeds 2 500 000. Replace the given executables: WindSim_461_fix.zip (4.3 Mb), with the file corresponding files in C:\VECTOR\WindSim4.6\WindSim_461 for a default installation. The missing figures error would not have any effect in other modules. This fix is not mandatory. | ||
| Adjusting for directional shifts at climatology points | ||
| The wind resource map is found by weighting wind fields against active climatologies. The wind fields used are those established under Wind Fields, whereas interpolated results should have been used in order to correct for directional shifts at the climatology points. | ||
| Conflict between the orthogonalization and coupled solver | ||
| If the property "Orthogonalize 3D grid" was activated in the module Terrain, this would lead to a conflict if the property "Solver" was set to Coupled in Wind Fields. | ||
| Export to WAsP format | ||
| When Export to WAsP format was activated, the files .wrg and .rsf were produced with results for the same heights as the wind resource maps. The calculation of the results was correct, but the height specification given within the files was set incorrect, in most case it was set to zero. | ||
| Forest modeling with solid obstacles | ||
| Solid obstacles are not yet implemented. Also when used in the forest model a porosity=0 should not be given. | ||
| Report generation | ||
| The report generation fails. Replace the given executable: report_html.exe with the file C:\VECTOR\WindSim4.5\WindSim_450\report_html.exe for a default installation; report_html.exe (1.1 Mb) | ||
| Multi-language support | ||
| Version 4.4.0 introduces multi-language support. A new language will automatically appear under Tools - Change Language when the resource files for that language is added to root folder of the WindSim installation. Currently four languages are available; English, German, Italian and Spanish. Smaller parts of the German, Italian and Spanish versions have not yet been translated, these parts will appear as @@Tag...@@, consult the English version for the full text. | ||
| Missing report template for transferred climatologies | ||
| An object specified as a "TransferredClimatology" will not appear in the report, because a report template is missing. Download and unzip the following report template; objects_climatology_transfer.zip, and place the file in the folder C:\VECTOR\WindSim4.4\WindSim_440\data\report_html. | ||
